Conscious Vs. Unconscious in Everyday Life
Most of our lives are lived unconsciously, on auto-pilot. Â As a result I believe many people are not living the life they really want to be living and feeling the connections that we naturally crave as human beings – not only with others… but more importantly, with ourselves.
An exercise to increase consciousness:
Sense your body and become fully aware of it whilst you are doing whatever you happen to be doing.
Doing this will bring you into the present.
You can do this while you are talking to people to remain alert and in the moment…You can practice moving your eyes about – if you are talking to someone you might choose to look at different parts of their face and continue moving your eyes about to remain ‘present’.
We do this because if you focus on one thing it is easy to go into trance ie. Be unconscious.
Being unconscious means that you are going inside of yourself and thinking. When you do this you are not aware. You thoughts are probably projections about the future or memories of the past; you may be creating scenarios or telling yourself different things, ‘zoning out’.
Diverting the eyes and sensing the body keeps you present.
You will find that you are a better listener, have more meaningful connections and feel more relaxed.
Your body is one of the best sources of information. It lets us know how we are doing through our feelings. By tuning in to how we are feeling, which is best done by asking and being silent or by simply sensing the body, we can make more accurate decisions based on what our soul deeply needs.
For example: ask yourself and notice how you really feel after having a cigarette, being with a particular person, eating certain foods or going for a walk. Does that event sap your energy or energise you?
When you have this information you can make conscious, informed decisions about anything and everything! Like anything else, this takes practice. In the beginning, you will notice yourself continually going into in an unconscious state and when this happens you can simply bring yourself back into the present by sensing the body and simultaneously focusing on external stimuli again.
Put this simple exercise in consciousness building to the test.
